Kiama's basalt soils and headland wind

Volcanic soil grows very good trees very fast, and the headlands try to knock them over.

Volcanic country

Kiama sits on the remains of ancient volcanic activity, and the soils that came out of it are the reason for everything else about the district. Deep, dark basalt-derived soil built the dairy industry, and it grows trees at a rate that surprises people who have worked on the sandy coastal strip further north.

That fertility cuts both ways. Establishment is easy, growth is fast, and a fast-grown tree lays down wide growth rings and less dense timber than the same species on poorer ground. Put that on an exposed headland and you have a structural conversation.

Wind on the headlands

The Kiama and Gerringong headlands are as exposed as anywhere on this coast. Onshore wind is constant, salt loading is heavy, and there is nothing upwind to slow it. Trees respond in the usual way — growth pushed inland, seaward foliage burnt, a permanently asymmetric crown — and the usual risk follows when a southerly change arrives from the other direction.

The right work here is selective thinning to reduce the sail area without making the crown denser, plus regular deadwooding. Shortening a wind-exposed tree tends to produce a dense flush of new growth that catches more wind, not less.

The Norfolk Island pines

Kiama's beachfronts and reserves carry mature Norfolk Island pines, many of them well over a century old and a genuine part of the town's character. They are also one of the more specialised jobs in the region.

A Norfolk has one leader and horizontal whorls of branches at regular intervals. There is no way to reduce it without destroying the form, and above a certain height the branch structure is not something a climber can work from safely. Most maintenance means an elevated work platform, and most of it is limited to removing failed or dead whorls and clearing storm damage. When one becomes genuinely unsafe, removal is usually the only remaining option, and it is a significant piece of work.

Rainforest remnants and rural blocks

Inland toward Jamberoo and Minnamurra the country climbs toward the escarpment and Minnamurra Rainforest, and patches of subtropical rainforest remnant survive on private land — red cedar, giant stinging tree, figs, cabbage tree palm. Vegetation of that type attracts additional protection and should be assumed protected until somebody confirms otherwise.

The rural blocks bring farm tree work: paddock trees, shelter belts, windbreaks that have got away, dead stags, and the inevitable camphor laurel and privet along every creek line. Several trees in one visit prices far better than a single call-out this far south.

Kiama Municipal Council runs its own tree preservation controls, distinct from Shellharbour immediately north and Wollongong beyond that. Can the big Norfolk Island pines be reduced?

Not usefully. They have a single leader and regular whorled branching, so cutting the top out destroys the form permanently and leaves stubs that will not recover. Maintenance is limited to removing dead or failed whorls and dealing with storm damage, generally from an elevated work platform. The real decision on a mature one is keep it or remove it.
