Not every problem tree needs to come out. A tree gets removed when it is dead, structurally failing, growing into a building or service, or is a declared weed that will never be anything else. Everything else is usually a pruning question.
The clear removals in the Illawarra are dead and dying eucalypts, camphor laurels that have outgrown a suburban block, cocos palms, storm-damaged trees with torn unions, and trees planted a metre off a slab in the 1970s that are now lifting it. The unclear ones — a big healthy gum that drops leaves, a fig that blocks a view — are worth a second opinion first, because a protected tree removed without approval is a fine on top of a bill.
How a removal actually runs
Almost nothing in Wollongong gets felled in one piece. There is rarely the drop zone for it, and on the escarpment side there is rarely flat ground to drop onto. The standard method is sectional dismantling: a climber works up the tree on rope, removes limbs in manageable pieces, and each piece is rigged and lowered rather than allowed to fall. The stem then comes down in blocks.
Where the tree is too large, too decayed to climb safely, or sits behind a house with no way to move material, the alternative is a crane or an elevated work platform lifting sections out over the roof to the street. The escarpment problem
A large share of Illawarra removals sit on ground that slopes. Figtree, Mount Keira, Mount Kembla, Austinmer and Thirroul all put houses on benched blocks with retaining walls, stairs and a battle-axe driveway, and the tree is almost always at the back and downhill. That means no chipper access, no ute access, and every kilogram of timber carried up steps by hand.

Emergency and storm work
Trees come down here in summer southerly busters and in autumn and winter east coast lows. Anything resting on a roof, blocking a driveway or touching a power service is an emergency and is triaged ahead of scheduled work. Anything still standing but leaning is assessed before it is touched, because a tree under load is far more dangerous than a stable one.

After the tree is gone
A removal leaves a stump, and the stump is a separate operation. Grinding or full removal gets decided by what is going over the top of it — turf and garden need less depth than a slab, a pool or a footing. How much does tree removal cost in Wollongong?

Will you take the wood and the mess away?
Yes, unless you want it left. Brush and small material is chipped on site and taken away, and hardwood rounds can be left stacked if you burn wood, or removed entirely. Say which you want before the quote is written, because leaving three tonnes of rounds on a lawn is a very different job from carting it out.
Do you need council approval before removing my tree?
In most cases somebody does, and it is the property owner who wears the penalty if it is skipped. Wollongong City Council protects most established trees on private land, with limited exemptions for dead trees, declared weeds and clearing under the Rural Fire Service 10/50 entitlement.
